I know some of you on my flist have tattoos. So instead of randomly searching google, I thought I'd ask you all: About how much does it cost to get a tattoo? Plain black (probably solid, not just an outline), small enough that it would fit on a business card, but probably not on a quarter.

Wish I could help you, but my last one was done about 6 year ago and was much larger and in colors. It cost me about $350.

I'd suggest checking out some places, letting them know what you are thinking about and getting quotes.

Good luck!

No less than $50, I'd say. Both of mine cost me about $50 plus tip each and they're both small, plain black kanji on my wrists.

Still better than $200+ which is... sadly what I was kind of expecting.

Both of my kanji [each] are just a little bit smaller than a business card, so I'd say you should be okay, price-wise.

Any tips on a good place to get it?

It really depends on what it is you're getting. Also, you'll want to put your tat somewhere that won't change too much as you age.

I guess I meant any recs on an artist, but that was a helpful tip, too. I'm still considering that one.

Ha! Wow, I'm lame. Okay, well, I got both of mine at Whatever 7 on St. Mark's. It was clean, well-lit, and the guys were nice. Mind you, this was about four years ago.

Where you get it done is sometimes a factor in pricing as well. I have a small one on the back of my neck, just solid black, my name in kanji. My guess it was $30, because I got it with another one that cost in the neighborhood of $50 But definitely as around and see what prices people quote.

Hm! Still, that estimate helps a little. I was anticipating setting aside $200 for it.

Depending on how detailed, I'd guess $60-$100. Mine was $130, I think, and it's outlined but bigger than a business card, and from what I've gathered since then, that was on the expensive side.

From what I've heard, it depends on where you go for it.

For serious! I think I'm getting my next one done in San Francisco instead on New York.

*laughs* I didn't mean states, silly! I meant store versus another.

Well, yeah! But Google hasn't been very helpful in finding me good, cheap tattoo places in New York, and there's a place I like in SF.

my boyfriend got the magician tarot card from the rider waite deck in black. it is about the the length and a half of a credit card and cost him $120. i'd estimate a black tattoo (just the outline) to be about $80, depending on detail.

At one point I was so obsessed with getting one secretly that I actually looked up a shit-ton of info on it. I remember hearing that Venus was a great place to go. You can also check out ratings here: http://newyork.citysearch.com/bestof/winners/tattoo_and_piercing
