I am highly amused.
I got talked about.
"Around this time, I ran into Carl Frederick once again, and this time he wanted to introduce me to Diane Turnchek, a writer, current Eastern Regional Director of SFWA, and founder of the Alpha Workshop for Young Writers. So Carl leads me over to her, and, much to my surprise, the first words out of her mouth are: "I don't have a crush on you." Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I mean, I wasn't even aware of the rumor of a crush, and so to find out that she doesn't have a crush on me, well, I never even got to enjoy the ego-boost being crushed on provides. I was, at once, flattered and crestfallen. Ian Randall Strock was on hand to document this encounter with camera, pad & pencil in hand. He snapped a photo for posterity; two, actually, because his flash was blink-inducing (though he seemed to think it was my fault).
After we got that whole crush buisness cleared up, Diane introduced me to two of her Alpha students, which I'm sure was the highlight of their evening (I mean, to meet The Slush God!). A little later, Carol Pinchefsky after inquiring about my love life and asking me how many numbers I'd acquired thus far in the evening, told me that when she was still single she would have had a handful of numbers by that point in the evening. At this point, one of Diane's Alpha students walked past. Carol remarked: "What about her? She's cute." "Um, yeah, she's in high school" says I. At which point I explain to Carol about the Alpha thing, though looking back on it, I can see why she'd be puzzled to find high school students at a party with an open bar."
I am highly, highly amused.
Mostly because I think the whole, "dress to look older than I am" thing really worked. :D
This... also kinda makes me really, really happy. Because it sorta means that people are going to know my name in a few years time. I am moving up in the world!
