Before I get into anything that might be spoilery, I will say that I liked the movie! I thought it was full of cool things, and interesting plot devices. Also: Michael Fassbender. He makes a movie worth it for me. James McAvoy was good too—although that hair, yikes—and obviously so was Hugh Jackman. I recommend the movie to anyone who likes this sort of thing. You'll probably like this one too.
Now. Spoilery things. This is your last warning.
First of all, one of the coolest things to come out of the movie was the revelation that JFK was a mutant. DUN DUN DUUUUN. There's not a whole lot more to say about that, as it was sort of a throw away thing that was mentioned, but it's neat to think about! I'm curious as to what his abilities were.
Quicksilver was surprisingly awesome. I was prepared to be critical of him, but his snark charmed me. And the scene with the running around the walls of the room. It was pretty great. Plus the throw away line, "You control metal. My mom used to know someone who could do that." I laughed, even as I was thinking, "Nooooooooooooo..."
It occurred to me, when Erik was making the Sentinals shoot up the humans, that that alone might have been enough to change history. He wouldn't even have had to show himself. All he had to do was make it look like the Sentinals can't work, to change public opinion. From a story-writing perspective, I can see why that's less satisfying than how it actually went down. But I had the thought.
And I'm disappointed that Erik and Charles didn't find a way to reconcile. I mean, this way the writers keep Magneto as a bad guy in their back pocket, but still. There was plenty of sexually charged moments between the two of them—even the two of them as played by Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart—and that was pretty great, but the romantic in me wants them to live happily ever after.
Ok, ending things: I totally called the Jean bit. I actually said, "Wait, what if Jean's still alive now?" And then she was, and a friend who clearly has never been to the movies with me and doesn't know about my ability to call plot developments only moments before they happen leaned over and was like, "Wow, you totally called that." It was gratifying.
That being said, this means one of two things is true: either Charles figured out how to help her with her Phoenix problem by looking at Logan's memory, or it's going to still be a problem in the future and Logan will probably have to kill her again. Which, damn. That's rough.
(Actually, that's... sort of a weird thing. She kills Charles in that movie, yet there he is in the future, and yet Logan has all the memories from that movie. I feel like this is a thing the writers didn't entirely think through, and I want someone to explain it to me in a way that makes sense, because I'm sure there's a plausible way for it all to happen.)
And then the whole bit with Mystique being Stryker and possibly altering Logan's past... That means it's possible he wouldn't have the adamantium skeleton and claws anymore. Which... it's not like he didn't live through that once, and regardless of how the past changed, he still has those memories, some of which are probably physical. (Idk. Maybe not, what with ~time travel~.)
But if he doesn't have the adamantium, he's sort of less useful. Which sounds harsh, all typed out like that. And maybe there's no reason for him to need the adamantium and the advantage it gives him in fighting. But, from a story-writing perspective, that seems unlikely. They're going to keep making these movies, so there will probably be things for Logan to slice up.
After Credits Thing: A friend mentioned Apocalypse. Which... sounds familiar, and sounds like the right thing to happen in this movie, but I don't actually know anything about it? I'll have to do some research.
Yeah, that's all I got. It was good. Michael Fassbender still gets me all hot and bothered.
