Sleigh bells ring! Are you listenin'?
In the lane, snowfalkes glisten!
A beautiful night, we're happy tonight!
Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland!

Because the wrapping paper, the ribbons, and hot chocolate, the pine scent, the lights, and the carols, are all in the air, I thought I Iwould just share a little of my thoughts on the holiday season.

The above lyrics are from my all-time favorite Christmas carol. I'm not really sure why I like it so much, but we go way back. I think I liked the idea of a Winter Wonderland, to tell the truth.

Anyway, I heard this song playing a total of three times in different places today. And it just reminded me of all the things I love abought this time of year.

In Santa Fe, on Christmas, the thing to do is go to Canyon Road. I'll fill you in as most of you won't know what this is (I said most, Liza. I know that you know.) Canyon Road is the street in Santa Fe that has tons of art galleries, and the more expensive houses, though there are many expensive houses that aren't on Canyon Road. On Christmas everyone on Canyon Road has put up a display of lights. The most beautiful Christmas lights are there. They block that road for that night, no cars allowed, and people walk with loved ones and friends, up and down the street admiring all the lights. People who have houses make bonfires, and sometimes if you are lucky apple cider or hot chocolate, so that the people walking around can stop and warm up, and there is caroling.

I've done this many times, including once with the famous Dylan McDermott and his wife and daughter. (Again, for those who don't know, he used to be on The Practice a TV show kind of like Law and Order.)

But that's not all there is to Christmas. No. Again, in Santa Fe, we're lucky, it'll snow. And the combination of snow and lights is enough to make even the sternest person smile. It's absolute beauty. Right there in your own backyard.

And then, if we've had enough rain that year, on the seven acres that my family owns (which is basically a small mountain in the middle of a valley, though we only own one side, and a small part of the valley) there is a pond that might be full. And in the winter it freezes. My neighbor puts up Christmas lights around the pond, and the day before puts a little more water on the surface. I have ice skated on a frozen pond, on my own property, in the snow, with nothing to light me but the moon, the Christmas lights above and around me, and the small bonfire in the distance, for those who don't wish to ice skate.

These are my holidays. The ones that I think about, the ones that I remember fondly, wishing that it would rain in Santa Fe, wishing that it would freeze the pond again, and wishing I wasn't 2000 miles away. Wishing to feel the smoothness of the ice beneath the balde of my skate, wishing to smell the air filled with the scent of pinon and pine, wishing to see the glow of colored lights on the refective surface of the ice.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. Filled with love, friends, family, and everything else that matters to you.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] forever_slash? I did comment on your jurnal, but I got the cards today, and I loved mine. I'll give Jaida hers tomorrow. Thank you! <3
